Widar Halén, "Norway 1814. Images of an Era. Design and Fashion. Classical Christiania"

"There was a time when the king was half-French, half-Danish, and absolutely un-Norwegian – when a Swedish viceroy was the head of the Norwegian government and kept a tight rein over the country's political life..."

The growth of a national art community in Norway around 1814 occurred in the midst of major social transformations. Developments in the country's art, architecture and design were the point of departure for the exhibition series Norway 1814, which formed part of The National Museum's bicentennial celebration of the Norwegian Constitution.

The richly illustrated catalogue encompasses the three parts of the exhibition, and demonstrates its wide diversity. The catalogue features landscapes highlighting the beauty of Norwegian nature and portraits displaying the development of new bourgeois ideals. The fashions of the period are also depicted, as is the architecture of the "classical" Christiania, where the typical buildings of the area known as the "kvadratur" acquired new functions. This applied to Paleet, among others, a mansion that became the royal residence in Christiania in the early 19th century.

The catalogue contains texts by Anne Kjellberg, Nils Messel, Marianne Moe, Trine Nordkvelle, Geir Thomas Risåsen, Bente Aass Solbakken, Bodil Sørensen and Einar Sørensen.
