Tschudi, Volle & Yvenes, "Piranesi and the Modern"

What message do Piranesi’s fantastical architecture, vertiginous stairways and crumbling ruins have for us today? "Piranesi and the Modern" explores the continuing relevance of the 18th-century printmaker and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778). His architectural visions contributed to defining the Modern in various art forms in both the 20th and the 21st centuries. His "Imaginary Prisons" (1761) and his "Campo Marzio" (1762) have a unique status. Artists, architects, filmmakers and writers have derived inspiration from the ways that Piranesi’s labyrinthine passages and infinites spaces seem to lead both outwards into the world and inwards into ourselves. In a series of richly illustrated texts, this book demonstrates links between Piranesi’s etchings and photography, painting, architecture and film from the early 20th century until our own day.
