Necklace. Máret Ánne Sara, "Pile o'Sápmi"

This is a stunningly beautiful necklace with a strong message, and can be used as a statement piece (or just as a stunningly beautiful necklace, honestly).

The pendant is based on Máret Ánne Sara's "Pile o'Sápmi", and is made in collaboration with Matt Lambert. The reindeer skull and the chain are both made from stainless steel. The threads that wind through the skull come from the shawl of a traditional Sami costume, with the color palette of the Norwegian flag.

"Pile o'Sápmi" can be seen hanging in the lobby of The National Museum, and consists of 400 reindeer skulls, each with a bullet hole in its forehead. These have been mounted as a big wall hanging, with a pattern referencing the Sami flag. The piece was made as a protest against the Norwegian government's forced slaughter of reindeer in Finnmark, and a symbol of the ongoing colonization of Sami people and the Sami rights movement.

  • The chain is approx. 55 cm long (21.6 inches)
  • The reindeer skull is approx. 4 x 2 cm (1.5 x 0.8 inches), and the threads are about 10 cm long (3.9 inches)
