Else Hagen. Between People

Else Hagen. Between People is the first book about the visual artist Else Hagen (1914–2010). She developed a distinctive modernist idiom with an emphasis on the intimate sphere, close relationships, and interpersonal relations. As an artist, she was diverse; she worked with painting, various graphic techniques, large, monumental works in public buildings, and composite, material-based works. And she was modern, one of the first women in Norway to build an extensive career as a visual artist while raising a family. Was she also a proto-feminist, someone who helped lay the foundation for the strong neo-feminist movements of the 1970s in Norway?

This book provides a broad and rich introduction to her artistry, and is published by Orkana in collaboration with the National Museum. The exhibition comes to the National Museum on 10 October 2024.
